Random

Here are some random things I just thought about while reading my pregnancy book today.  It's not all that interesting really, but I'm kind of using this as a journal for me too....so here we go.

At our first doctor appointment we were given the option to do early testing for down syndrome & spina bifida.  I believe it would include some blood tests and an ultrasound and a possible amniocentesis.  They talk to you early about doing these tests because they say you could fall into three categories: (1) you will want to terminate if you find out the child has downs and they have to do that before a certain week, (2) you want to find out if the child has downs so you can prepare, or (3) you don't want to find out until it happens.  So, I called the insurance company to see if the tests were covered and then Ryan and I discussed it.  We knew termination was totally out of the question, so we did not even care about that option.  So we just had to decide if we wanted to know or not know.  We ultimately decided not to do the tests and just let things happen as they will.  If there is something wrong with our child, there will be nothing we can do about it except worry by knowing early.  So we are going to just enjoy the pregnancy and hope for the best.

The next major test they talked to us about was cerebral palsy.  Apparently, even if you do not have the disease, and even if no one else in your family has the disease, you can still carry the gene.  They would do a blood test on me first and if it were found that I was a carrier, they would do a blood test on Ryan.  Both parents have to be carriers for the child to really be at risk of contracting the disease.  If it was found that we both were carriers, there were things they could start doing in utero to make the child's life better (or something like that).  I again checked with the insurance company to make sure the tests were covered, which they were, so we decided to go ahead with it.  We found out I am not a carrier so they did not have to test Ryan.

At my initial appointment with the OB nurse (right after I found out I was pregnant) she told me that the hormones will effect me in several ways, including feeling like I've forgotten something and what I've heard people refer to as getting "baby brains" which I guess is just being forgetful or "off".  Anyway, lately I have been feeling a little anxious and continually feeling like I've forgotten something.  I'll think there was something I needed to do or somewhere I needed to go and I just can't remember what.  I also find myself repeating questions or stories because I've forgotten I've told them...so I'll just lose my train of thought in the middle of a conversation.  It's like I'm more spacey!

Yesterday was our wedding anniversary.  We've been married for 3 years and together for 8!  Of course we had to work, but we went to dinner at a Japanese restaurant and then got some ice cream afterwords.  It was a fun night.
