So there's this attorney I work with who is about 5 years older than me and has two young children (5 & 2 I think) so he's pretty much deemed himself (unspoken) the pregnancy expert since it's only been 2 years since his wife was last pregnant. Now, generally I like this guy and we get along well, but sometimes he just irritates me with the things he says...especially now. Hopefully my examples will make sense.
From the day I announced to the office that I was pregnant he has called me "preggers." UGH!!! "Hello preggers. How you feeling today preggers? Everything going ok preggers?" And it's the same line of questioning EVERY DAY! I thought I was going to go nuts, but then he got busy at work and it kind of died down. Now he's started up again. Granted, a week or so ago he finally asked if it was ok to call me preggers and I said "I guess" (I felt bad because he asked...even though it took a couple months before he decided to do so). Anyway, now we're back to the "Good morning preggers. How you feeling today? Everything ok?"
So the newest thing he "teases" me about is being so called directionally impaired. This is because I look up and print out directions when I'm going somewhere new instead of being able to just figure it out. We had a conversation about this a while ago and it was determined I am just like his wife when it comes to directions (can't read maps well, needs printed directions, etc.). It was a funny conversation, but I should have known it wouldn't end there. Well, our choir rehearsals are at a college auditorium really close to my work, and I know how to get there. But since I don't usually go around that part of town, I wasn't 100% sure how to get home, so I printed directions...which he gave me a hard time about.
Him: "It's only 7 blocks away!"
Me: "I know how to get there, but I've never gone home from there before so I need my directions."
Him: "I can't believe it! You can't figure it out from there! You are just like my wife."
Then when we were leaving he said, "you know I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing with you." And my thought was, well I'm not really laughing, this is getting old, and it does make me feel like a moron. I'm sorry I didn't grow up in Charlotte and don't know my way around parts of town that I don't frequent!
So this morning he asks me if I made it home ok. (yesterday was the second time I went home from the theater, so I didn't need the directions because I knew where I was going.) Again, felt stupid, so I just said yes...probably in a less than friendly tone. Then he asks me if I've started working on the nursery yet. We've been waiting to work on baby's room until we found out the sex, which was FRIDAY. And since my choir show is this weekend, I've had rehearsals every night, so I don't get home until 10:00. So I said not yet. The response? "You better get on that. You gotta start working on it before you get too big and don't want to do it anymore." I told him that I'm sure I would want to do it especially since the whole nesting thing hasn't set in yet. "Well, you'll want to do it before you get to big to be on a ladder and you won't feel like painting." To which I responded that every time we paint Ryan does the top and I do the bottom. Again, probably not in the friendliest tone because I guess I'm just irritable and not in the mood for this...and I think he could tell because he let it drop.
One of my pet peeves (especially with him) is telling me what I should be doing or shouldn't be doing, what I should get or shouldn't get. I guess it bothers me because of course I should be doing everything that he and his wife did...and I would just like to enjoy my pregnancy and experience it as I go without too much worrying about what I should and shouldn't be doing. Now, I'm not saying that no one can give me advise, but some people just don't thing. I joined two pregnancy websites and there is so much information out there...and people post comments and there are so many different ways and opinions of what you should and shouldn't do, it really gets overwhelming. So I decided a while ago that I would just take the pregnancy as it goes and learn along the way. I'll ask my doctors if I have questions and let them guide me. It's just easier that way. So maybe that's why it bothers me when someone tells me I better get started on the nursery now! Let me do it in my own time. This is Ryan and my experience and we'll do things how WE want to do them!
Ok. Thanks for letting me vent. Please don't be scared to give me advice. I'm much more friendly with family :-)
